Pre-Requisites

Installing Exchange 2007

First step - prepare the AD - I ran this from the to be CAS server ( chosen randomly) . use the command /prepareAd
install .NET Framework - ensure you download version 2.1 or greater - any earlier and Exch setup will not proceed .
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=029196ED-04EB-471E-8A99-3C61D19A4C5A&displaylang=en
the executable is Netfx20sp1_x64.exe and it must be run from a command lineAfter successful install you get confirmation as below and may require a restart
Raise Domain functional level to the highesh possible level ( Windows Server 2003) ( In ADUC, right click domain and click raise domain fucntional level)
Install Windows Powershell ( 64bit edition) 1.0 from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=8913EEC8-B8AD-4889-AD85-A113F13441C5&displaylang=en
It needs to be run from the command line
Install IIS ( Add,remove, windows components, Application Server)have your windows setup cd handy
Enable the W3SVC service
2.2 EXCH 2007 Installation Steps:
After doing these steps ran setup.com /prepareAD and finally this started preparing AD for the installationNote after the install you will notice the following changes

1. An entry in ESM for Exch 2007 called "Exch Administrative Group"

2. A new OU in AD named Microsoft Exch Security GroupsBefore running setup - ensure that you have run the exchange readiness check. My search found that i need to install

IIS ( CP, Add R, windows components, application server, IIS). You will need the windows 2003 64 bit CD handy for this and restart the server....even though windows says you dont have to
WWW ( W3SVC) service

Next I ran the setup cd and to my surprise the install ran .. I was surprised as I already have exchange 2003 running as a front end server . When I did the upgrade from 2000 to 2003, I had to remove the 2000 front end server before being allowed to install the first 2003 server.
And at the same time while i am doing this I have exchange 2003 front end services running.
This completes the first aim .

The frontend server now has an Exchange Management Console (Start , programs, microsoft exchange server 2007, ) In the Server Condiguration pane , it lists "no servers with mailbox role", "no servers with Hub role" and the client access bit displays the newly installed exch2007 server "Ar-fe 2007"

The Exchange System Manager (2003) on the other hand has a new group called the "Exchange Administrative Group"- and within it - it holds Exch 2007 servers, the first exch 2007 server to be installed in the AR-FE-EX-07 server and it is therefore the new master
The original group - "First Administrative Group" has the exchange 2003 front end server and the backend server

Installed Exchnage 2007 SP1- make sure you have installed the .net framework 2.0 sp1 on your win 2003 server first.I also have installed a HUB server and a mailbox server and am able to move mailboxes from 2003 to 2007. I can also send messages between 2003 and 2007. The hub installs the connectors

Installed Exchange SP1 on the CAS server ( and hub and mailbox)the version is now listed as Version 8.1 (Build 240.6) - non SP1 are listed as ( Version 8.0 (Build 685.24)
